<p>Researchers and interventionists, particularly behavior analysts, have a long history of empirically evaluating and clinically implementing interventions based on the behavioral principles of reinforcement, extinction, and punishment for autistics/individuals diagnosed with ASD. The purpose of this review is to highlight the utility of nonlinear programming, which is detailed in the book <i>Nonlinear Contingency Analysis:</i> <i>Going Beyond Cognition and Behavior in Clinical Practice.</i> Nonlinear analysis promotes the evaluation of the costs/benefits of all available behaviors in an individual’s repertoire, thereby elucidating areas from which to build programs to establish new repertoires. This emphasis on skill building is central to minimizing behavior change procedures that may produce effects that are unlikely to be sustained under necessary conditions and may produce deleterious side effects. The components of the constructional approach with application to “severe and complex behavior profiles” are highlighted.</p>
