Workforce Participation Among Males in Jordan and Its Implication on Socio-Developmental Outcomes: Evidence from the Jordan Population and Family Health Survey 2023
摘要
Employment is an important indicator for economic stability, wellbeing and quality of life. The analyses examined two aspects of employment among males in Jordan: (1) socio-demographic factors associated with workforce participation among males and (2) association of workforce participation status with select socio-developmental outcomes.
MethodsData used for this analysis came from the Jordan Population and Family Health Survey 2023, which surveyed 5841 males in the age group 15–59. Work participation was measured by asking respondents if they worked in the last 7 days, even for an hour. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to answer the research questions.
ResultsAbout half (52%) of the males in 15–59 age group were working, the highest in the central region (54%), followed by northern (49%) and southern (40%) regions. The workforce participation was about 70% among males in age group 25–59. The odds of participating in workforce were higher among respondents having higher than secondary education than those below secondary, and Jordanians than Syrians. Further, currently working was positively associated with socio-developmental indicators such as use of modern contraceptives, having account with financial institutions, and regular internet use.
ConclusionWorkforce participation is a key marker of society’s economic wellbeing. The findings suggest significant levels of variations in workforce participation by region and level of education. Further, workforce participation acted as a motivating factor in bringing positive behavior change among males.
