<p>In view of the numerous and serious environmental problems of our time, the question arises as to the environmental awareness of the current generation of pupils. Against this background, the internationally validated NEP scale, an instrument for measuring fundamental attitudes towards the relationship between humans and nature (New Ecological Paradigm), was used in a&#xa0;shortened version, in accordance with the recommendations of Schleyer-Lindenmann et&#xa0;al. (<CitationRef CitationID="CR62">2018</CitationRef>) on <i>N</i> = 10,356 secondary school students in Bavaria. The aim was first to validate the proposed short scale and then to analyse group-related differences in the present sample. The analyses show good approximate fit values for a&#xa0;one-dimensional structure. At the same time, t‑tests and analyses of variance show group-related differences in environmental awareness in favour of girls (<i>d</i> = 0.48) and in favour of pupils at grammar school („Gymnasium“) compared to secondary school („Realschule“, <i>d</i> = 0.33) and lower-level secondary school („Mittelschule“, <i>d</i> = 0.57). With the variant of the NEP scale used in the article, a&#xa0;validated German-language short scale for young people is now available, which can be used in practice and research.</p>
