Watch and Learn: Wie Schüler:innen und Lehrpersonen Erklärvideos für den Naturwissenschaftsunterricht nutzen

The use of educational videos has become more and more established in recent years. Due to their growing importance in students’ learning processes, the use and benefits of educational videos are of interest to subject didactics and educational science. So far, only few insights exist into how students and teachers use educational videos for school-related purposes or which criteria they consider when selecting freely available educational videos on the Internet. Therefore, this article aims to analyse and describe how educational videos are used. The results are based on a qualitative study with guided interviews, which was conducted in the context of science lessons at lower secondary level. The qualitative interviews provide insights into the quality assessment and use of educational videos by students and teachers. The results indicate that both teachers and students need to develop media didactic skills when dealing with freely available educational videos, in order to ensure a high-quality selection of and a reflective approach to educational videos.
