摘要

Purpose of Review

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease with a wide range of prevalence, the goal of its management is to optimize control symptoms and reduce the risk of asthma exacerbations. It has been shown that poor adherence may contribute to a reduced outcome especially in patients with severe asthma. This paper aims to review some concepts about adherence and how to evaluate it, as well as identify the benefits of correct treatment and follow-up, especially in patients with greater disease severity.

Recent findings

Up to 75% of individuals with difficult-to-treat asthma do not follow the prescriptions given by their doctor. Various interventions are described to achieve greater patient adherence, resulting in reduced exacerbations, fewer visits to the emergency department, and an increase in ACT (Asthma Control Test) score.

Summary

Poor adherence to asthma treatment is associated with inadequate disease control, increased severe exacerbations, healthcare utilization, and rising healthcare costs. It is important to implement personalized interventions by establishing appropriate communication channels among healthcare professionals and patients.
