<p>The purpose of this review is to assess and summarize the current state of US policymaking specific to long-duration energy storage (LDES) deployment in pursuit of federal and state-level decarbonization efforts. The manuscript seeks to identify the gaps, opportunities and challenges involved with developing necessary policy and regulatory frameworks to enable the commercialization of the full scope of emerging LDES technologies. The manuscript reviews relevant industry literature on the subject, including reports from the Department of Energy and affiliated national laboratories. Key findings of the review are that the development and adoption of LDES will largely follow from the adoption of state policies and programs that support it, as evidenced from activities in California and New York, two states that have expanded upon well-established policy frameworks related to short-duration energy storage to advance early long-duration policy incentives intended to support the development of diverse technologies that can provide durations in excess of 10 h. There is an urgent need for states to move faster to incorporate LDES into their energy storage policies and/or to address the unique characteristics of LDES through new policies.</p>
