Experimental Work on Buried Pipe in Sand Soil Reinforced with Fiberglass Mat Under the Effect of Impact Load

The effectiveness of fiberglass chopped strand mat (fiberglass mat) as a new and cost-effective soil reinforcement material to protect buried pipes from the effect of impact loads was experimentally investigated in this study. Impact tests of four different impact energies were conducted on soil models of either unreinforced or fiberglass mat-reinforced sand soil; the results were compared in terms of the amplitude of impact force, soil displacement, and pipe strain. Test results showed that reinforcing the sand soil with two fiberglass mat layers improved the load distribution in the sand soil and resulted in lower soil displacement and pipe strain as compared with reinforcing with a single layer of fiberglass mat. Study findings showed that fiberglass mat can be used as a soil reinforcement material to protect buried Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride pipes from the effect of impact loads and can be implemented in improving the performance and service life of buried pipes in sand soil.
