Construction Control of Embankments on Soft Ground Treated with Reinforced Granular Layer

Construction rate and time allowed during embankment construction are critical parameters influencing the stability of embankments on soft ground. This study examines the impact of rate of construction and consolidation intervals on embankment performance through a comprehensive case study. A test embankment 6 m high with 1Vertical:1.5Horizontal side slopes and top width of 39 m was analyzed simulating staged construction approach. Fill layer thicknesses of 0.5 m and 1.0 m were evaluated in conjunction with consolidation periods of 5 and 10 days after each loading. The analysis considered embankments constructed both without and with 1.0 m dense granular bed. Further analysis considers a geogrid placed at 0.5 m within the granular bed, extending 1.5 m beyond the embankment toe. Key performance indicators, including settlement at the center and lateral displacements at the toe during construction, were estimated to assess stability. The factor of safety, as calculated via the Matsuo plot method, confirms that embankment stability is enhanced by reducing the construction rate and increasing the time for consolidation, with a pronounced improvement observed when a reinforced granular bed was employed, due to reduced lateral deformation.
