Revisiting the Bearing Capacity Factor Nc of Strip Footing Resting on Soft Undrained Soil Underlying Stiff Undrained Soil
摘要
The paper examines the bearing capacity factor Nc of rough strip footing resting on soft undrained soil underlying stiff undrained soil using a validated and well-established two-dimensional finite element model. The study focused on examining the effect of the ratio of the thickness of the top layer to the footing width (H/B) and the ratio of the undrained cohesion of top layer to the undrained cohesion of bottom layer (Su1/Su2), and examining the accuracy of available Nc values proposed in past studies. The paper focuses on addressing a gap in knowledge regarding the lack of examination of available Nc values proposed in past studies and the limitation of H/B to 2.0 in past studies. The results showed that the Nc factor is significantly affected by H/B and Su1/Su2. In addition, the obtained results of Nc factor have been found to be in good agreement with those reported by Merifield et al. but diverge from those proposed using Chen upper bound analysis and the empirical equation of Brown and Meyerhof. Finally, a multi-scale model has been proposed to predict more accurate Nc factor using evolutionary polynomial regression algorithm. The model has been tested and scored excellent prediction capabilities.
