Performance Evaluation of Sand–Tire Derivative Mix as a Geomaterial

The present study evaluated the geotechnical behavior of sand mixed with scrap tire derivatives in varying proportions. The study considered two types of tire derivatives available commercially in the market. The mixtures were subjected to laboratory tests to determine specific gravity, grain size distribution, relative density, void ratio, compressibility, and shear strength. The addition of tire derivatives reduced the specific gravity and unit weights of the mixtures while increasing the void ratio, indicating a more lightweight and porous structure. Owing to the high compressibility and low shear strength of tire derivatives, the mixes showed increased compressibility and reduced shear strength. Further, drained triaxial shear tests suggested altered particle interaction mechanisms between sand and tire particles. The results demonstrated that the mechanical behavior of the sand was significantly influenced by the type and proportion of tire derivatives, with implications for their potential use in geotechnical engineering.
