<p>Wheat yield is largely affected by lodging, therefore evaluating and enhancing lodging tolerance should be a key objective in breeding programme. This study was conducted for the assessment of lodging tolerance by involving a set of 101 released varieties of bread wheat at ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal, India during 2022-23. The observations were recorded on various stem architectural traits namely length of first basal internode (FBI), second basal internode (SBI), third basal internode (TBI), forth basal internode (FOBI), fifth basal internode (FIBI), sixth basal internode (SIBI), peduncle length (PL), plant height (PH) and lodging rate (LR). The analysis of variance showed significant variations among the varieties for all the recorded stem architectural traits. The traits viz., PH, FBI, SBI, and TBI have highly significant and positive correlation with LR, indicating remarkable contribution of these traits in lodging tolerance (LT). Further, FBI, SBI, TBI and LR revealed high heritability and genetic advance, indicating effective selection for LT. In principal components analysis (PCs), the first three PCs axis exhibited Eigen values &gt; 1.00, and contributing 81.00% to the total variability. Further, rotated component matrix revealed that PC1 accounted for the highest variability (46.50%) and showed the most positive effects of NOD, NOI, FBI, and PH, while PC2 explained 22.30% to the total variation, and revealed the most positive effects of TBI, SBI, FOBI, PH, FBI, and LR. Varieties viz., DBW17, HD2329, HD2189, HD2428 and DBW14 exhibited lower lodging rate and had dwarf to medium height, and solid to semi-solid basal internode. This study will assist breeders in selecting suitable donors for various stem architectural traits for utilization in the development of new populations for lodging tolerance in bread wheat.</p>
