Purpose of Review <p>The physical and mental health impact of Eating Behavior Disorders results in high morbidity and mortality. Despite their complex pathophysiology, pharmacological treatments remain limited, and many patients remain symptomatic. Currently, only olanzapine, fluoxetine, and lisdexamfetamine have regulatory approval for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, respectively, with modest efficacy. This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of emerging pharmacological treatments in treatment-resistant eating disorders. By analyzing primary and experimental studies, it will evaluate their impact on symptom reduction and recovery. Addressing this gap may contribute to improved therapeutic strategies.</p> Recent Findings <p>This systematic review synthesized findings from six prospective, double-blind RCTs published between 1994 and 2019. The studies evaluated five pharmacological agents—including cisapride, testosterone, methylphenidate, liraglutide, and intranasal oxytocin—as treatments in adult patients with eating disorders, namely anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder. As to anorexia nervosa, cisapride, testosterone, and oxytocin showed no benefits. As to binge eating disorder, long-acting methylphenidate demonstrated benefits on weight loss, and on binge frequency and metabolic parameters control, respectively. Collectively, these findings highlight the promise and limitations of novel pharmacological approaches in targeting specific symptoms of eating disorders, underscoring the need for further rigorous investigation.</p> Summary <p>The potential of novel pharmacological interventions in the management of treatment-resistant eating disorders is assessed in this systematic review. The pharmacotherapies reviewed yielded no discernible effects on weight gain or psychopathology in anorexia nervosa. However, among individuals with binge eating disorder, liraglutide significantly reduced binge episodes.
