Purpose of Review <p>Hypovitaminosis D is a global concern, sufficient quantity of vitamin D is required for regular functioning of the muscular and nervous system. Latest evidence suggests the association of bruxism to stress, anxiety, depression and neuromuscular excitability. This makes the association of reduced vitamin D levels with bruxism questionable. Information on vitamin D serum levels in bruxism patients is very limited. Hence, this systematic review was done to assess the association between deficiency of vitamin D and bruxism and to highlight the facts of current available literature in this field.</p> Recent Findings <p>Out of the 250 studies identified, two studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the present work. One of the studies evaluated the association between severity of bruxism and reduced 25-hydroxyvitamin D serum levels. The other one studied the connection of sleep bruxism to vitamin D deficiency, low dietary calcium intake and also the association with anxiety, depression and frequent headaches. Both the studies were of good quality with no risk bias.</p> Summary <p>To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic review being done on this topic. Current available data from the two small case control studies, suggest that vitamin D deficiency and low dietary calcium intake may be more frequent among adults with self-reported bruxism compared to controls. However, causal relationships and treatment implications remain unclear. Further, substantially large, well-designed prospective and interventional studies are required to throw light on the effects of vitamin D on the etiopathogenesis of bruxism.</p>

Purpose of Review
