摘要

Purpose

The aim of the present review is to highlight the medicinal and nutritional importance of millets and bring to the fore their role in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Due to their low glycemic indices and rich phytochemical composition, millets are being presented as a health-food that is sustainable.

Recent Findings

Current studies have shown that millet-based traditional foods lower pre-diabetic patients’ fasting blood sugar (FBS) and HbA1c levels considerably, thus proving their efficiency in diabetes management. Millets have specifically been found to have been referred to in ancient texts and being climatically tolerant to unfavorable conditions, thus being fit for food security.

Summary

Millets are also being viewed as a key element of contemporary diet due to their nutrient content and tolerance to climate change. Their use in contemporary dietary patterns, facilitated by the experience of ancient Ayurveda, will help build public health and be a sustainable agricultural practice. Further policy and research will facilitate millet consumption and production.
