African indigenous medicine is deeply rooted in cultural practices and beliefs and has been integral to African healthcare for centuries. Despite Africa’s widespread reliance on them, incorporating traditional remedies into contemporary medical practice has been challenging. These include issues of scientific validation, regulation, and standardization. This review evaluates the intersection of reverse pharmacology and traditional medicine in Africa, highlighting their potential to integrate indigenous knowledge with modern scientific practices. It examines historical perspectives, current trends, and challenges in validating and leveraging traditional African remedies to address global health challenges, including emerging pandemics.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the reliance on traditional medicine underscored its accessibility and cultural resonance across African communities.
