Star Fruit (Averrhoea Carambola): Exploring its Nutritional Value, Health Benefits, and Consideration for Potential Risk and Future Application in Biotechnology and Medicine

This review aims to summarize the diverse biomolecules found in star fruit (Averrhoa carambola), highlighting their therapeutic properties and potential applications. Star fruit, a tropical fruit mainly harvested in Southeast Asia, is gaining attention due to its rich content of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals and its increasing use in dietary supplements, culinary additives, and pharmacological products.
Recent FindingsStar fruit contains a variety of phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and anthocyanidins, along with significant amounts of vitamins A, B3, and B5 and essential minerals like potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Recent studies demonstrate its various health benefits, including anti-hyperglycaemic, anti-hypercholesterolaemic, cardio-protective, anti-inflammatory, gastro-protective, anti-hypertensive, and neuroprotective effects. Additionally, nanoparticles synthesized from star fruit extracts have shown promising antimicrobial activity against pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas.
ConclusionWhile star fruit offers numerous therapeutic benefits, excessive consumption may lead to moderate neurotoxic and nephrotoxic effects due to antinutritional factors like tannin, oxalate and caramboxin. Further research is needed to understand better the relationship between fruit consumption and the severity of toxicity. The growing application of star fruit in various health-related products underscores the need for balanced consumption and continued exploration of its health benefits.
