Purpose of Review

Cancer remains a significant global health challenge. Due to the limitations and side effects of conventional therapeutic methods, it is necessary to explore more novel treatment strategies. Multiple secondary metabolites derived from natural sources, especially marine creatures like soft corals found in coral reefs, have attracted attention due to their potential anti-cancer properties.

Recent Findings

The metabolites derived from coral reefs are being studied to be used as a potential treatment for cancer. Use of these metabolites as a treatment method has many advantages as well as limitations. The suitability of each compound varies for various forms of cancer. Drug development is facilitated from the complex ecosystems that surround coral reefs, which is the habitat of variety of marine species, including corals. The potential for oral administration and digestibility makes them a potential candidate for the development of anti-cancer drugs.

Summary

The metabolites derived from coral reefs are a rich source of bioactive metabolites that could have anti-cancer properties. Inspite of their therapeutic potential, certain concerns like exploitation of coral reefs, difficulty in chemical synthesis, and lack of large-scale production methods prevent them from being widely used in clinical applications. Further investigation and studies are required to utilize these marine resources to their full therapeutic potential and developing anti-cancer medications.
