Purpose of Review <p>This article summarizes the studies about insecticides that increase the locomotor activity of triatomines vectors of Chagas disease.</p> Recent Findings <p>Some plant monoterpenes increase the locomotor activity of kissing bugs. Recent evidence suggests that this effect could occur through interaction with receptors of the octopaminergic/tyraminergic system.</p> Summary <p>Pyrethroid insecticides increase the locomotor activity of insects. This property allows them to be used as flushing-out agents to diagnose triatomine infestations in rural dwellings. Because of the emergence of pyrethroid-resistant triatomine populations, it is necessary to search for new flushing-out compounds. Monoterpenes could be an alternative because they also hyperactivate triatomines. Some monoterpenes appear to exert their hyperactivating effect through the octopamine/tyramine system. This makes them an attractive option for the development of bioinsecticides because there is only one insecticidal compound on the market whose site of action are the octopamine and tyramine receptors (amitraz).</p>

Summary

Pyrethroid insecticides increase the locomotor activity of insects. This property allows them to be used as flushing-out agents to diagnose triatomine infestations in rural dwellings.
