Purpose of Review <p>This article addresses the current landscape of organ machine perfusion technology as a potential method for increasing availability of transplantable organs. Efforts to expand the donor pool through the increased utilization of donation after circulatory death (DCD) are limited by standard preservation methods (i.e. static cold storage), motivating new methods of recovering marginal organs.</p> Recent Findings <p>Machine perfusion demonstrates the potential of overcoming these challenges, but a lack of data sharing remains a barrier to standardized practice of effective procurement methods. While the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) has traditionally maintained data on preservation techniques and outcomes, data on machine perfusion is often held by the machine perfusion manufacturers, posing ethical concerns and preventing a full understanding of these devices’ potential.</p> Summary <p>This review calls for the regulation of data pertaining to machine perfusion to foster transparency, improve organ outcomes, and support evidence-based innovation and policymaking in transplantation.</p>

Purpose of Review

This article addresses the current landscape of organ machine perfusion technology as a potential method for increasing availability of transplantable organs.
