γδ T cells are a unique subset of lymphocytes that integrate innate and adaptive immune functions. Their ability to rapidly respond to cellular injury and recognize stress-induced ligands makes them key players in immune surveillance and inflammation. This review explores their involvement in alloimmune responses following solid organ transplantation and their response to immunosuppressive therapies.
Recent Findingsγδ T cells can promote graft rejection by producing IL-17 and exerting cytotoxic effects. However, specific subsets, such as Vδ1+ γδ T cells, are linked to immune tolerance, particularly in liver transplantation. Immunosuppressive agents impact γδ T cells differently: calcineurin inhibitors suppress their activity, whereas mTOR inhibitors enhance their antiviral and cytotoxic potential.
