Understanding these mechanisms may provide insights into minimizing buprenorphine’s negative effects on dental health while preserving its therapeutic efficacy.</p> Recent Findings <p>Buprenorphine’s pharmacokinetic properties, including its lipophilicity, facilitate prolonged retention in oral tissues following sublingual or buccal administration. Its weakly basic properties promote potential ion-trapping in oral epithelial tissues, further sustaining buprenorphine exposure in oral fluids. Recent evidence also suggests that active transport mechanisms, such as P-glycoprotein, may influence&#xa0;buprenorphine’s&#xa0;accumulation within salivary glands. Together, these factors elevate the risk of enamel demineralization, xerostomia, and dental caries.
