Pollen types in the diet of Tetragonisca angustula (Latreille, 1811) (Meliponini, Apidae) in a conserved area of Atlantic Forest

Among the Meliponini, the species Tetragonisca angustula is one of the best-known and has a wide distribution throughout Brazilian territory. Information about the plant species used by bees as resource sources is crucial for planning management and conservation actions. One way to identify these floral sources is through the analysis of pollen present in the food pots of these bees. This study aimed to identify the pollen types that reflect the flora visited by T. angustula in a conserved area of Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro, as well as to verify whether the pollen usage pattern indicates a homogeneous or heterogeneous utilization of the local flora. A total of 23 pollen pot samples were analyzed, resulting in the identification of 103 pollen types, with emphasis on the Fabaceae family and the types Artocarpus heterophyllus, Cecropia pachystachya, and Trema micranthum. The pollen spectrum revealed a greater contribution of types associated with plant species that have abundant flowering in the tree canopy and small-sized pollen. Additionally, types linked to tree species that provide nectar were also among the most frequent. The high presence of non-dominant pollen types indicated secondary resource sources for the bees in the study area. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that T. angustula adopts a generalist and opportunistic strategy in pollen collection, which contributes to its high potential for pollinating various species in the Atlantic Forest.
