Aluminum accumulation in herbaceous plants: new insights for the Cerrado flora

Native plants from the Cerrado biome grow and develop in acidic soils with no aluminum (Al) toxicity symptoms. Although the arboreal stratum is widely studied, the accumulation of Al on the herbaceous vegetation is unknown. Our objectives were to identify Al-accumulating herbaceous plants, to identify the sites of Al accumulation, and to evaluate the distribution of Al and nutrients in the aerial part (stem and leaves) in herbaceous species in the Cerrado. Leaves and stems of 32 species were collected in Cerrado to: quantify Al and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Fe), anatomical analysis, and histochemical identification of Al accumulation sites, analyze relative abundance (%) of Al, Si, P, Fe, Mn, Ca, and Mg by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM–EDS). Twenty-eight species were considered Al accumulators and the main Al accumulation sites were pectocellulosic cell walls, chloroplasts, and nuclei followed by glandular trichomes and mucilaginous idioblasts. For some species, both chemical quantification and SEM–EDS analysis detected Al while the histochemical test was negative. Thus, the combination of chemical quantification, SEM–EDS, and histochemistry analysis was essential and complementary. The shoot’s nutritional status and anatomy did not reveal distinguishing characteristics between Al-accumulating and non-accumulating species. This unprecedented study showed that the strategy of accumulating Al was remarkable in herbaceous species from Cerrado (90.6% of the species studied). The sites of Al accumulation were similar to those reported for Al-accumulator woody species, except for the presence of the metal in mucilage-secreting structures.
