On the ecological value of the pseudopetiole in Cyperaceae and its usefulness in Liliopsida

Leaves are the main site of photosynthesis, so it is reasonable to expect that this organ is strongly influenced by environmental variables. In this sense, the comparison between open and closed habitats is useful in highlighting environmental influences on plants. Although mainly from open habitats, it is widely known that several lineages of Cyperaceae colonized the interior of forests. Typically, sedges that occur in closed environments have leaves that are wide, long, and occasionally present a constriction in the proximal portion of the lamina, similar to a true petiole. This structure, named as “pseudopetiole”, has been correlated with forested habitats but this association has not been truly explored. In order to understand the diversity of this structure in Cyperaceae and its relationship with forested environments, 538 species from all genera of the family were analyzed and correlation tests between the presence of pseudopetiole and habitat were carried out. Pseudopetiole is an unusual structure in Cyperaceae, being present in only 19 genera, of which in four it is present in all species. There are two types of pseudopetiole in the family, namely, Mapania- and Oreobolus-type, where only the former is phylogenetically correlated with forested environments and is an adaptation to the microenvironmental conditions of the forest interior. The adaptive value of Oreobolus-type pseudopetiole (if any) remains as an open question and may be related to blade deciduousness. Pseudopetiole is a useful term to refer to leaf phenomena in monocots and future research could investigate the distinction of this concept with others such as “petiole”.
