<p>Environmental stress causes significant crop damage by constraining its productivity. Previous data shows that phytohormones regulate plant growth and development and play an important role in managing plant responses against abiotic stresses. Melatonin (MEL) is a versatile organic signaling molecule with a small molecular weight and potentially defends plants against these stresses. The present review discusses the biosynthesis mechanism and signaling of MEL in plants based on recent research. Here, the review focuses on MEL's role in combating several abiotic stresses, such as temperature (heat and cold), drought, salinity, and heavy metal stress in plants. Lastly, the interaction between Mel and other phytohormones in controlling these responses is also reviewed.</p>
