<p>Generic boundaries within tribe Diocleae have undergone recent changes. Most genera have been redefined, and their limits are now clearer. However, some puzzling species, such as <i>Dioclea paniculata</i>, still lack precise generic classification. In this study, we present new phylogenetic analyses designed to determine the phylogenetic position of this species together with a morphologically similar taxon recently discovered in Peru. Our findings suggest that both of these taxa should be classified within the genus <i>Lackeya</i>. We estimate the genus’ origin to be in the Pliocene, dating back approximately 4.5 million years ago. The genus likely originated in the Andes and migrated from south to north between 3.2 and 2.8 million years ago. Based on these results, we present a taxonomic synopsis for <i>Lackeya</i>, recircumscribing the genus to encompass <i>D. paniculata</i> and a new Peruvian species <i>L. grandiflora</i>. For all the species we include illustrations, and preliminary conservation assessments. Our study provides valuable insights into our understanding of the tribe Diocleae, shedding light on the taxonomy, evolution, biogeography, conservation and morphology of <i>Lackeya</i>.</p>
