The landscape of radiomics in clinical oncology research

Radiomics, as a research hotspot in oncology and radiology, has the potential to delve deeply into high-throughput information in tumor images that often remains invisible to the naked eye. This study analyzed registered clinical research data from TrialTrove and Clinicaltrials.gov, aiming to depict and analyze the current clinical research landscape of radiomics in oncology. Our findings indicate that the number of registered radiomics studies has been consistently increasing over the past decade, with observational studies dominating. These research activities are mainly concentrated in China and the United States, and most of the funding comes from academic institutions or government agencies. Furthermore, an increasing number of studies report radiomics as a secondary or other endpoint. It is noteworthy that radiomics is widely perceived as an important tool for constructing predictive models, and 36.06% of studies have integrated additional omics technologies alongside radiomics. This study highlights the current vigorous development trend of radiomics and suggests that further investment from companies is needed to propel the scale and depth of radiomics research.
