摘要

This article reviews the application of geometric ideas, originally developed by Poincaré in the context of celestial mechanics, to address transport problems in oceanic environments. The Lagrangian descriptor tool is reviewed and used to visualise the geometric structures that reveal key transport features in three environmental problems based on recent marine spill cases. We demonstrate that these abstract mathematical concepts provide precise responses to critical ocean challenges.
