Variational and numerical approaches to contact problems in electro-elasticity

In this paper, we study a frictionless contact problem for an electro-elastic body and a semi-insulator foundation which has a rigid-plastic behaviour. We formulate the problem variationally, where the unknowns are the mechanical displacement and electric potential. Using Banach’s fixed-point theorem, we establish existence and uniqueness results. To approximate the solution and analyze the behavior of the materials under contact constraints, a numerical study is performed. The simulations illustrate the influence of contact conditions and validate the theoretical convergence results.
