Treat osteoporosis in older adults with anti-resorptive and anabolic therapies to reduce fracture risk
摘要
Osteoporosis is a progressive skeletal disease involving bone tissue deterioration and a loss in bone mass. Primary osteoporosis affects older adults > 70 years of age and is characterised by a sustained decline in bone mineral density and an increase in fracture risk. Pharmacological treatment comprises of anti-resorptive agents as first line therapy and anabolic agents for patients at very high fracture risk, used either individually or in sequential treatment. Non-pharmacological interventions to manage osteoporosis include calcium and vitamin D supplementation, lifestyle modifications, fall prevention strategies and structured exercise programmes.
