Prevent mpox infection with vaccines and consider antivirals in severe disease
摘要
In August 2024, the WHO declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern for a second time, and the outbreak of this disease continues to spread worldwide, impacting men, women and children. Vaccines that were initially developed for smallpox and can be used to prevent mpox include Jynneos, ACAM2000 and LC16m8. There are no US FDA-approved treatments for mpox, but several therapies indicated for other orthopoxviruses have been used for severe mpox disease including tecovirimat, brincidofovir, cidofovir, trifluridine and varicella immunoglobulin intravenous. Continued research is needed to identify and validate effective therapies for severe mpox infection.
