Inform, screen and manage patients with impulse control disorders in Parkinson’s disease
摘要
Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are common in patients with Parkinson’s disease and are typically associated with dopamine agonist therapy. Left unmanaged, ICDs can result in a range of negative consequences. Patients and their families should be informed about the possible occurrence of ICDs, and patients screened regularly to detect symptoms early. ICDs in Parkinson’s disease are primarily managed by reducing or discontinuing dopamine agonist therapy until symptoms resolve, with cognitive behavioural therapy and second-line agents used if required. Further research is required to help develop new management strategies and therapeutic agents for this area of unmet need.
