Association between vitamin D deficiency and general and abdominal obesity in older adults: insights from baseline data of the Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study (BLAS)

Obesity has become a global health issue, straining healthcare systems. This study investigates the correlation between vitamin D status and general and abdominal obesity in the older population of Iran.
MethodsThis cross-sectional study uses data from the initial phase of the Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study (BLAS). We assessed the association of vitamin D levels and general and abdominal obesity while adjusting for various sociodemographic factors and lifestyle behaviours like frequency of physical activity and certain food consumption. Blood samples were taken after at least 12 h of fasting to measure serum 25(OH)D levels. The significance level was set at < 0.1.
ResultsOf the 1278 participants, 387 (30.28%) were vitamin D insufficient, 329 (25.74%) were deficient, and 562 (43.97%) had adequate 25(OH)D levels. Analysis revealed that individuals in the highest quartile of vitamin D had a 31% lower likelihood of abdominal obesity (OR=0.69, CI=0.46–1.03, p=0.074). Conversely, participants with vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency showed a 34% and 42% higher likelihood of abdominal obesity, respectively, based on ATP III criteria (insufficiency: OR=1.34, CI=0.96–1.87, p=0.086; deficiency: OR=1.42, CI=0.99–2.02, p=0.055). Additionally, those with vitamin D insufficiency had a 51% greater odds of general obesity according to ATP III standards (OR=1.51, CI=1.08–2.10, p=0.015). Moreover, vitamin D–insufficient individuals had a 37% and 31% higher odds of abdominal obesity based on IDF and Azizi criteria, respectively (IDF: OR=1.37, CI=0.96–1.97, p=0.081; Azizi: OR=1.31, CI=0.98–1.74, p=0.063).
ConclusionVitamin D deficiency appears to be related to abdominal obesity, while insufficiency is connected to both general and abdominal obesity in older adults from Birjand.
