Association between Remnant Cholesterol and Metabolic Syndrome beyond Conventional Lipid Parameters in Middle Age and Elderly Population: Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) cohort

Given the established role of dyslipidemia in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases, we aimed to evaluate the association between lipid parameters and metabolic syndrome (MetS), especially highlighting the relationship between remnant cholesterol (RC) and MetS in middle-aged and elderly people.
MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 1918 middle-aged and elderly participants. Of them, 1131 had metabolic syndrome. After measuring lipid parameters, to calculate RC levels, we subtracted LDL-C and HDL-C from total cholesterol. Then, we assessed the relationship between lipid parameters and MetS using multiple logistic regression analysis.
ResultsThe average age of the participants was 62.10 ± 8.05 years. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that in addition to traditional lipid indicators such as TGs, RC levels were also associated with the Mets. Meanwhile, RC levels showed the strongest relationship (odds ratio [OR]: 2.68; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.22–3.23), followed by TG levels (OR: 1.01; 95% CI 1.01–1.02). The association of RC with this disease was stronger among males than females.
ConclusionThe relationship between remnant particle levels and MetS is considerable and beyond traditional lipid parameters.
