Influences of post weld heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical property of transient liquid phase bonded joints for Inconel 718 alloys

The influence of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) on microstructure and mechanical properties of transient liquid phase (TLP) bonded joints of Inconel 718 alloys was studied. It is indicated that PWHT enlarge both the isothermal solidified zone (ISZ) and diffusion affected zone (DAZ) in TLP bonded joint, and the sizes of grains within ISZ and DAZ are increased. The brittle Cr–Mo-Nb enriched borides in the DAZ are still present after PWHT, but their are some changes in their sizes, amounts and distribution form. Mechanical tests confirmed that the tensile strength of the TLP bonded joint after PWHT decreases slightly, while the plasticity of the joint is improved. Fracture analysis indicates that the fracture location of the joint changes from the DAZ to the ISZ after PWHT. Correspondingly, the fracture morphology transforms from intergranular brittle fracture to a transgranular mixed fracture mode of ductility and brittleness. This is mainly due to the fine grain strengthening, solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening of ISZ in the joint after PWHT are all weaker than those of DAZ, as well as the evolution of brittle Cr–Mo-Nb enriched borides within DAZ.
