Purpose of Review

Children with disabilities (CWD) face significant health disparities due to structural inequities, systemic bias, and limited access. Pediatric physiatrists, specialists in optimizing function and quality of life, play a vital role in advancing health equity. This article highlights the critical role pediatric physiatrists play in shaping policy, advancing structural change, and ensuring the voices and needs of CWD are meaningfully addressed through clinical care and interdisciplinary collaboration, and advocacy.

Recent Findings

Key focus areas include trauma-informed and gender-affirming care, early intervention, inclusive education, and adaptive recreation. The article also examines disparities faced by minoritized groups, who experience delays in diagnosis and limited access to coordinated, inclusive care. Advocacy efforts range from injury prevention and inclusive legislation to expanding interdisciplinary services and assistive technologies. Strategies such as outreach clinics, telehealth, and coordinated models improve access in underserved areas.

Summary

Ultimately, pediatric physiatrists are called to understand and address the root causes of health disparities, offer anticipatory guidance, and empower families – ensuring all children can participate fully and thrive, regardless of ability or background.
