摘要

Purpose of Review

Leadership skills are an integral component of a successful career as a physician, however specific leadership skills are often not a target of physician education. The aim of this review is to evaluate the literature for physician leadership training and look specifically at leadership development in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) to provide a rationale for the optimal leadership competencies for physiatrists.

Recent Findings

Physiatrists are not intentionally being trained as future leaders.

Summary

Leadership skills should be specifically addressed and targeted for physiatrists, and dedicated leadership training should be a planned part of all PM&R residencies with a thoughtful curated curriculum including the following competencies: emotional intelligence, communication skills, conflict management/difficult conversations, leading a team, managers versus leaders, mission and vision setting, change management, mentorship, and personal values and bias.
