Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Trauma and the Evolving Role of the Anesthesiologist: A Narrative Review of Emerging Topic Trends

This narrative review is a comprehensive discussion of point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS) in trauma anesthesiology. Expanding on current concepts, it reviews the integration of artificial intelligence, medical education, global health initiatives, and the role of transesophageal echocardiography.

There are several quality studies suggesting a role for POCUS and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in the setting of trauma. There is expanding evidence on cardiorespiratory ultrasound including during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Artificial intelligence usage is increasing in POCUS for users less familiar with interpretation of images. Globally, there is effort to expand ultrasound skills to under-resourced countries.

Trauma anesthesiologists have a critical role in diagnosis and assessment of trauma, enhanced with the use of POCUS and TEE. Robust research is lacking. Further research should focus on expanding on current observational and case report studies.
