Point-of-Care Fluorescence Imaging in the Emergency Department

Purpose of Review

Point-of-care technology is being increasingly utilized in healthcare for rapid diagnostic assessment of patients. This review focuses on two point-of-care fluorescence imaging devices and their potential applications within the Emergency Department.

Recent Findings

Fluorescence imaging technology encompasses a broad range of devices and has wide applicability within the medical field. The MolecuLight i:X detects the presence and location of bacteria within wounds, utilizing endogenous fluorescent molecules. The SPY Portable Handheld Imager (SPY-PHI) utilizes fluorescence microangiography to visualize blood flow and tissue perfusion. Both devices have high diagnostic accuracy, but each device has its own set of limitations. Overall, fluorescence imaging technology can directly impact patients and clinicians at the point-of-care.

Summary

Novel point-of-care devices utilizing fluorescence technology have immense potential to provide timely information that can enhance clinician confidence, influence treatment planning, and improve patient outcomes. Further research is required to assess applicability in diverse clinical scenarios to expand the use of the technology in the Emergency Department.
