Recent Technological Advances in Airway Management

摘要

Purpose of Review

The purpose of this review is to explore the published medical literature on technology used in airway management including a historical perspective, description of currently used methods and devices, and discussion on areas of continued exploration in this field. Special focus will be made on recent developments and advancements in our understanding of emergent airway management, and how technological solutions can aid in overcoming traditional challenges to effective and safe airway management in critically ill patients.

Recent Findings

Traditional technologies used in airway management such as x-ray, ultrasound, and computed tomography remain highly valuable in this field. However, a variety of new and emerging devices, combined with increased use of telemedicine and artificial intelligence to aid in the prevention and early detection of important complications, have the potential to greatly improve providers’ control over the airway of unstable patients.

Summary

Recent advances in technology may allow for more precise, rapid, and safe airway control under emergent conditions. While many of these modalities remain investigational, all may offer significant advantages over traditional methods for endotracheal intubation. However, continued investigation into their effectiveness and development is needed.
