摘要

Purpose of Review

There remains some controversy regarding standard management of mandibular condyle fractures. Many maxillofacial trauma surgeons are reluctant to treat these fractures in an open fashion due to concerns regarding surgical risks, particularly injury to the facial nerve branches and parotid gland. The use of closed reduction techniques remains the mainstay of treatment for a large portion of surgeons.

Recent Findings

Most recent evidence suggests that open treatment of these fractures has superior outcomes in regards to occlusal stability and function. Surgical risks can be minimized with the use of careful treatment planning and appropriate technique.

Summary

There has been a paradigm shift over the past several years as open treatment has gradually supplanted closed reduction as the gold standard of care for mandibular condyle fractures.
