摘要

Purpose of Review

The number of lung transplants performed worldwide every year has steadily increased from approximately 4000 in 2010 to over 7800 in 2023. Lung transplantation is a viable treatment option for end-stage lung disease. Nutrition support is an underutilized, but integral part of transplant care and can affect both short-term and long-term success.

Recent Findings

Data regarding the nutrition needs of lung transplant recipients are sparse. Current practice is extrapolated from guidelines for critically ill patients, or post-surgical patients.

Summary

Prehabilitation can improve resilience for surgery and waitlist survival by addressing disease-specific nutritional challenges. Nutritional interventions after surgery support immune function, promote healing, and prevent complications. Long-term nutrition support focuses on preventing and managing comorbid conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, and hyperlipidemia. The aim of this review is to summarize current evidence and formulate nutritional recommendations for this vulnerable population.
