Pediatric Trauma—Not Just Little Adults—Part 1: Differences in Physiology and Injury Patterns

Pediatric trauma patients are often evaluated at non-pediatric trauma centers. In this manuscript, we highlight the nuances in anatomy, physiology, and injury patterns that adult hospital providers should consider when managing children.

Pediatric trauma patients demand specialized attention, expertise, and resources to ensure optimal outcomes. Recent studies have revealed discrepancies in the outcomes of pediatric trauma patients, particularly those who are younger and more severely injured, who received care at specialized pediatric trauma centers compared to those treated in adult hospitals. Unique mechanisms of injury, such as firearm injury and non-accidental trauma, have become increasingly prevalent in the pediatric population and must be recognized and managed effectively.

Our manuscript highlights the unique considerations and challenges in managing pediatric trauma patients. We also address the complexities of non-accidental trauma and firearm injury, which require ongoing research, education, and advocacy to improve child safety.
