摘要

With tall buildings doting the urban landscape, there is a growing need for geotechnical characterization of sites to develop more reliable geotechnical design parameters for foundation analysis. The conventional approach of using boreholes alone is inadequate and results in an uneconomical design. Use of modern advanced testing techniques, such as CPTu, SPT energy measurement, pressuremeter, and geophysical tests not only help in characterizing the strata to obtain realistic design parameters but can also result in substantial savings in foundation cost. This paper presents two case studies of tall building projects in Gurugram, Haryana, illustrating the selection of design parameters using advanced investigation techniques. The enhancement in the design net bearing pressure for shallow foundations and the increase in capacities of pile foundations is illustrated to demonstrate the benefits of using these methods. The cost savings as a result of higher capacities can be substantial. The extra cost of these advanced tests is only a miniscule part of the savings in foundation cost. For the case studies presented, the savings in foundation cost is over 3600–7000% of the extra expense incurred for the additional testing, thus fully justifying the use of these tests for superior geotechnical characterization.
