<p>In recent days, the advancement of technology across various fields, including infrastructure development and underground construction facilities, has been essential to predict the behaviour of the structure in the early stage and design accordingly. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is one of the recent technologies that digitally represents the actual facility of a structure. The BIM technique is an innovative approach to managing building processes and the ongoing operation of structures. The implementation of BIM for underground facilities is challenging due to the irregular and undefined nature of natural soil layers. In a country like India, the studies and application of BIM models incorporating geotechnical information remain limited or nearly non-existent. The present study explains the benefits of geotechnical BIM, the principles, components, and a few examples of applications. A case study is attempted to develop a part of the BIM model with geotechnical information for the application of deep excavation in an urban city in South India. This study uses the Geotechnical Modeller extension in the Autodesk Civil 3D software to develop a geotechnical BIM model. In particular, the case study highlights the advantages and challenges in implementing geotechnical BIM.</p>
