Appraisal of Face Stability in Conventional Undrained Soft Ground Tunneling

Face stability is an important aspect of soft ground urban tunnel construction. Current study reviews the face stability models for conventional tunnel construction in soft ground conditions using the project data from construction of cross passages, connecting the twin tunnels, for Kolkata East West Metro Project UG-1. Due to surface constraints, ground improvement using horizontal chemical grouting was undertaken due to soft ground conditions. In situ shear strength measurements of post-ground improvement conditions indicated an increment of 32% to 44% during tunnel excavation. Review of face stability, with and without ground improvement, in context with the safety factors confirmed an increment of over 30% and subsequent reduction in observed volume loss. The results were studied and validated using numerical analyses and thereby apprises the face stability models in soft ground conditions. The study extends the standard face stability charts to larger tunnel geometrical ratio (C/D) for their application in design and construction or urban tunnels in soft ground conditions.
