Effectiveness of the Outer Buttress Walls in Minimizing Displacements of Strut-Free Excavation: Physical and Numerical Modeling

This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation of two small-scale, strut-free cantilever pile walls. The focus of the study is on the influence of external buttress walls on the displacement behavior of strut-free retaining structures. The study systematically evaluates the effectiveness of buttress walls in reducing displacements and pile bending moments by comparing the behavior of structures with and without buttresses. High-resolution digital cameras were used to capture the displacement field across the sidewall and top surface, with interpretation performed using GOM Correlate digital image correlation software. The results demonstrate that buttress walls significantly reduce displacements compared to cantilever pile walls without buttresses. Plaxis software was used for 3D numerical modeling to simulate the physical model, with input parameters obtained from independent tests. The calibrated model was then utilized to analyze the effect of buttress walls in reducing pile displacements and bending moments. The results confirmed their significant influence compared to cantilever pile walls.
