Assessing the Efficacy of Alkali-Activated Fly Ash in Enhancing Electrokinetic Consolidation of Clayey Soils

The current study investigates the combined use of electrokinetic consolidation and alkali-activated fly ash (AAF) to enhance the geotechnical properties of clayey soils, a novel approach distinct from existing stabilization methods. Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate soil strength, consolidation behavior, and microstructural changes under varying AAF concentrations and voltage gradients. Results indicate that the addition of 5% AAF improves soil strength by 92.68%, reduces compressibility by 7.7%, and decreases hydraulic conductivity by 15.7%. Electrokinetic consolidation significantly accelerates settlement compared to traditional methods, with enhanced performance observed at higher voltage gradients. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed densification and cementation bond formation in treated soils. These findings underscore the innovative potential of AAF-electrokinetic consolidation as a sustainable, efficient solution for soil stabilization, addressing environmental concerns and performance limitations of conventional methods.
