Bending Moment Distribution Along the Sheet Pile Wall due to Surcharge Loading

An experimental study has been conducted on the sheet pile wall to obtain the variation in the bending moment of the wall by varying various parameters around it. Eight strain gauges have been pasted on the model sheet pile wall to get the microstrains on the sheet pile wall when the excavation of the sand in front of the wall is carried out. The excavation has been made in three layers, and the distance between the sheet pile wall and adjacent footing has been varied. The depth of excavation and depth of footing have also been varied in this study. Results indicate that both the depth of excavation and the proximity of footing significantly affect the bending moment experienced by the wall. Increased excavation depth leads to higher bending moments due to greater lateral pressure from the backfill soil. The findings are validated through simulations using PLAXIS 3D software. The study contributes to more effective design and construction practices.
