Assessment of the Leaching Behavior of Landfill Mining Waste at Tiruchirappalli City in India

The legacy waste resulting from landfill mining activities at the Ariyamangalam dump yard has been gathered and analyzed to determine its potential for leaching metals, thus rendering it appropriate for reuse in external applications. The physicochemical properties of soil-like material (SLM) with size fractions smaller than 2 mm have been evaluated. Water extracts from soil-like material and local soils were tested for leachable characteristics. The concentration of total heavy metals in SLM and local soil at the solid and liquid phases was used to calculate the leaching ratio. Zinc and chromium were found to be the most abundant and least abundant leaching metals in both materials. Even though metal leaching is modest in SLM and local soil, with ranges of 0.02–1.47% and 0.02–0.25%, respectively, it is critical to examine the leaching pattern of metals in SLM before considering bulk reuse in offsite and onsite applications. The contamination indexes, especially the metal enrichment index and enrichment factor, are used to validate the leaching ratio. Each metal element’s leaching behavior and pattern were used to assess SLM’s viability for reuse applications.
